Earning it…

It’s not the job of a ML team to announce open competitions to the media before spring training. However, experienced reporters can tell when something is up at camp. The front office does have a duty to tell specific players if they are competing for a job at the ML level.

Every situation is different and each year is unique. Teams may be forced to turn over a position to a default player-for any number of reasons. Some teams feel obligated to cede a position to someone they are financially beholden. In other cases, teams don’t wish to start the ML clock any sooner than they have to (See Kris Bryant).

Heading into spring training, it appeared there were open competitions in Yankee camp and in Mesa for the Cubs. I hadn’t read about the Cardinals situation. Each of these teams recently rewarded worthy players with the news each has dreamt about their entire lives-making the 26-man roster.

Jordan Walker, a 20-year-old outfielder will open as the Cards starting left fielder. He had a spectacular spring. Hayden Wesneski finished the 2022 season on a high note for the Cubs after being acquired in a late-season trade. From what I’ve seen from afar, read and heard, he’s as ready to be a contributor as the #5 starter. He beat out veteran, Adrian Sampson-who did not pitch well this spring. The Cubs could have easily defaulted to Sampson-as they would have the past few years. Last and maybe most importantly, Anthony Volpe was named the Yankees starting shortstop. He beat out two competitors-one of whom has a little experience and would have provided the Yankees with a safe landing spot. No matter where they bat Volpe, he’ll be under immediate pressure to succeed. I’m not sure that the expectations for Walker or Wesneski are as high. Regardless, it’s nice to see each of these guys earned their spots.
