T minus twelve and counting

Depending on one’s perspective, March is one of the longer months. Even though we shed an hour and move forward, the month is 31 days (like January, May, August, October, and December). It also rages in like a lion and out like a lamb, or vice-versa. If you live above the Mason-Dixon line, you’re probably begging for warmer weather like I am.

March 30 can’t come soon enough for me and scores of ML players tired of spring training. I’ve long argued that players’ arguments for a shortened ST fail to see the irony in their complaints. Yes, Cactus and Grapefruit League games are primarily for the fans and the local economies. Yet. every year a number of players begin the regular season, out of shape. Others still arrive in camp rehabbing from some injury (real or imagined) and come north ill=equipped to perform at the highest level.

MLB opens the regular season on Thursday, March 30. Why they have chosen Thursday, is beyond me. As it stands, I’m ready for baseball, but I’m always ready for baseball. However, it’s only 18 degrees (and sunny) with a nice breeze today-none of which is actually baseball weather. Unless you’re a kid ditching school, 30 degrees on opening day isn’t all that much fun.

The Cubs open at home against the Brewers while the Sox open in Houston against the defending World champs. Of all the games on the 30th only two look promising as far as the weather goes. The Rockies travel to San Diego and the Mets are in Miami. As I’m currently a free agent, I’d almost consider a quick trip for warmer.

I can’t say that an April 5, preseason workout/scrimmage in Beloit is any more promising than freezing my tuchus off at Wrigley. Watching the Cubs opener from a bar in Wrigleyville isn’t my cup of tea.
