It’s hard to believe that professional sports franchises place such a low premium on character. Yet, the news surrounding current prospects in both the NFL and NBA draft are concerning.
I guess we all have different thresholds for what we will tolerate or what sins we’ll forgive, but the guys and gals vetting players should care a little more. Teams have to balance what is predictive and what is merely “youthful indiscretion”. Character extends beyond college athletes on the verge of professional careers, Unfortunately, MLB is dealing with domestic abuse cases right now. One player is currently in limbo while another is waiting for the league to complete its investigation. Ordinarily, one would assume that players that have been accused of mistreating women, wouldn’t garner much support. Some Cleveland Browns fans are proving me wrong right now.
The NFL has some time to figure out if talent outweighs immaturity and the likelihood of future issues. We love to give people second and third chances, but at what cost?
