Last night 7 Chicago Cubs pitchers combined to no-hit the Padres in a meaningless Cactus League game. It really doesn’t matter in the big picture, but it sure was fun to watch from afar. Editor’s note: I didn’t stay up to watch the full game.
While the workload for any given pitcher in a combined no-hitter isn’t as onerous, it’s more difficult to get each of the pitchers to be “perfect,” which is no small feat. What I found more interesting is that 18 different Padre hitters failed to get a single hit. You’d think one member of the greatest lineup of all time could muster up a single.
Strange things happen under the cloudless blue skies in Arizona-very good fielders look like little league right fielders. Locating a ball in the sun can be treacherous and not just for the players on the field. I had to laugh when gold-glove outfielder Trent Grisham misplayed a double into a triple. Sure, David Bote smoked the ball, but the sun couldn’t have been an excuse.
Both Chicago teams are doing well and fans can forget about the blizzard (ha), the Blackhawks, the Bears and whatever else ails them.
I guess that no-hitter might mean something at the end of the day.
