I have to question some of the numbers MLB cited in defending the new rule changes. Earlier this winter, a report said that injuries in the minor leagues were down in 2022 due to the increase in base size. At the time I wasn’t thinking clearly.
In all the years of parsing every silly comment by ML front offices, I don’t recall anyone injuring himself on the basepaths because of the base being only 15 inches. Sorry, baserunners and fielders suffer injuries for a plethora of reasons-size of base has never been one of them. That being said, the 18 inch base will probably result in more stolen bases and action.
I have to admit, it was hilarious that Sox second baseman was caught stealing second base because the base was only 18 inches. Neither broadcaster noted the irony. That’s why I’m here.
Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar.
One response to “Does size matter?”
The main purpose of the larger size base was to reduce collisions at first base. A collateral purpose was to reduce over-sliding. Oops! As usual the White Sox didn’t get that message. No comment from Len and Conor either except to admit that the runner overslid. Did you know the Iowa Cubs announcer did the game with Coomer yesterday in place of Hughes? Not bad and worked pretty well with Ron.
