Mardi Gras is only two days away

It’s probably too late to place a large order for paczkis, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find some or won’t be treated to some of the pre-Lenten pastries. Over the years, I wolfed down some of the better versions from Northwest suburban, Euro bakeries. I’ve also suffered through some torpedoes. One needn’t observe Lent to enjoy a paczki or a Mardi Gras feast.

Ash Wednesday marks the start to the Lenten Friday fish fry season. Last year, I embarked on my personal fish fry crusade long before Lent and followed up with some Wednesday excursions with the usual suspects and on my own. I didn’t highlight the better examples; The Shanty in Wadsworth, St. Norbert’s KOC in Northbrook were tops in my book. As I’ve stated before, it’s more than just the prep, it’s about the ambiance and folks serving the food. Most supper clubs, sports bars and family restaurants that offer Friday fish fry’s usually serve prime rib on Saturday and fried chicken on Sunday.

Unfortunately, my favorite Cajun restaurant, Heaven on Seven closed its doors this past year and I’ll likely pass on a Mardi Gras feast, but will probably pursue the Friday and Wednesday fish fry with equal vigor. Anyone is welcome to join me-aside from the church functions, every place has expansive menus.
