Let’s start with the simple fact that nobody is perfect. Throwing our support and money behind professional athletes and entertainers can be difficult when their personal lives don’t align with our belief systems.
However, rooting for a player whose actions border on illegal or immoral is something different entirely. At present, White Sox fans are having to sort through Mike Clevinger’s domestic issues. What makes things difficult is that he hasn’t been charged and MLB is still investigating the allegations. We’re supposed to presume innocence until proven otherwise, and we’re all forced to wait this one out. That’s not to say that several people haven’t already made certain conclusions-as it’s human nature when the allegations are as horrific.
I know some people have claimed that Cubs fans are hypocrites because of how we welcomed Aroldis Chapman in 2016. I was not in favor of the Cubs acquiring Chapman because of his domestic violence problems. However, Chapman was suspended by MLB for 30 games and served the suspension. It doesn’t excuse his behavior, in my mind, but he did serve the time. I wouldn’t take the chance that he wouldn’t do so again. Several teams take chances on guys with serious character flaws. Management has to reconcile their standards for winning or dollars. Some fans will boycott, but others will sign on the dotted line if it increases the chances of winning.
I’m not sure how mad Cleveland Browns fans are right now. When they acquired QB Deshaun Watson, everyone was up in arms. Did the league-imposed suspension lessen anyone’s anger? Should it? Are Browns fans bad people for supporting a team that would sign him despite his behavior?
One response to “What’s a fan to do?”
The answer to your last question is “yes”. And I would be more ticked off if the Bears had somehow signed Watson. But, you know. It’s easy for me to say because I don’t care at all about the Browns and only a little about the Bears. Is it OK now to attend Blackhawks games now that those involved in the coverup and worse have been purged from the or-gan-i-za-tuon? I am not sure of the answer. Life IS complicated and most things are grey and not black and white.
