The other day, Tim McCarver passed away at 82. His contributions to the game were great although some fans didn’t love his broadcasting style. What impressed me was his four decades, playing career and who he caught and that he was the first catcher to lead the league in triples.
McCarver played in the 50’s-80’s and handled two of the stronger personalities in the game: Steve Carlton and Bib Gibson. The two HOF pitchers trusted McCarver which enhanced his national broadcasts. Personally, I didn’t care for his didactic style as it bordered on stating the obvious. He did influence several broadcasters and brought the game to millions of viewers over the years.
One response to “R.I.P. Tim McCarver”
We tired of him but all in all more positives to his career than negatives. And the poor guy had to toil on 100+ degree astroturf heat and humidity for hundreds of games. Born and died in the same city. He never went Hollywood on us.
