32 is a magic number..

The Cubs announced the names of the 32 players they have invited to spring training as non-roster-invitees. Mixed in with a few notable prospects, one will find a few familiar names-guys that spent time with the big league Cubs in the past.

At first glance, the number seems high, but when one considers most of the players will begin the season in the minors and may never see the big leagues in 2023 it makes sense.

The players will get a look in big league camp and audition for 29 other teams along the way. They’ll also gain invaluable experience spending time with willing mentors. Over the years, I’ve heard of a few instances where veterans haven’t been generous with their wisdom.

It’s been fun to see these guys get at-bats or innings in games that matter and in front of family and friends. Even after NRI’s get sent back to minor league camp, it’s fun to watch them play in front of their families on the back fields.

For fans with limited time in either Arizona or Florida, watching B games on the back fields may sound like a luxury, but for fans looking to avoid the bigger crowds and expensive tickets, this is a great option.

  1. And those reasons are exactly why there are B squad games. It may be great for friends and family but seats are uncomfortable, no shade and a lack of decent, or any, concessions. If you know the player then you will have a great time. Otherwise, not so much.

There was a year in the early 60s when all 4 MVPs in the AL, NL, NFL and AFL wore #32. Koufax, Elston Howard, Jim Brown and a running back for the Bills. (not OJ; he came later). The name escapes me and I am not looking it up. Not important enough to me. I am guessing 1964.
