After writing about Michael Wacha remaining available to any team that will pick up a 2-year deal, I read that the 30-year-old righty is also available if anyone is interested.
Unless you’re a fan of the Orioles, Angels or Twins, Bundy’s name probably means nothing to you. However, folks that pay attention to 1st round picks and middling prospects may recall the name.
He was selected by Baltimore in the 1st round (#4) of the 2011 draft, He came straight from a big name high school in Owasso, Oklahoma. Unlike, Wacha, he hasn’t really had much objective success in his 8 year ML career. Only 3 of the 8 seasons were decent. He’s struggled with injuries, poor timing and bad luck.
While his 54-65 record and 4.74 ERA aren’t all that impressive, he’s proven somewhat durable since becoming a starter. 3 teams and countless pitching coaches have tried to harness the talent that made him a #4 pick overall.
I didn’t get the chance to know Dylan, but I did meet him and spend some time as he was trying to straighten things out in 2015. He still was on the ascendancy and may have thought he didn’t need the help, but was putting in the work.
I don’t know if he’s really an underdog becasue he’s already made $31 million+ in his career. Not too shabby.
One response to “The Dylan Bundy story”
Not to dump on Baseball Reference but they are counting his getting 5 outs in his first cup of coffee as a “season” in the majors. So he really has made $31 million in 7 years which is even less shabby. He has thrown 140 innings or more in a season only 4 times and never pitched close to 200 innings in a season so you can see why he is available. His ERA has ballooned. I wish him luck and a turnaround in his stats if he catches on somewhere. You would think that he would get an invite from sone team at least.
