Bleaker days lie ahead for people living in the Midwest and northeast and not just because the weather is going to get worse in the coming weeks. It’s not as if the sports teams around here offer any hope.
It’s not to late to look into escaping to either Florida or Arizona for some ST baseball. I understand that things have only gotten crazier in both markets and that neither experience is as pure as they once were.
However, everything I’ve been reading about the 30 ML teams has been positive. Even the perennial cellar dwellers are drinking from half-full glasses of Pabst. Last year’s deficiencies are merely bumps in the road to a World Series championship. It’s all very idyllic, really.
As someone who has never experienced March in Florida, and can only speak of happy times in Arizona. There is nothing quite like an afternoon spent in a ST facility watching your team prep for the upcoming season. It’s like spending time at a large convention (in a city equipped for such things)-everyone is there with a common purpose and for the most part, people are happy. If your team loses, it’s only a meaningless, exhibition game, but if your team wins, it’s a sign of things to come.
Finding an inexpensive route to either the Cactus or Grapefruit leagues isn’t easy, but I know folks that have found it within their means. I’m not sure that anyone’s positive thoughts will be diminished after watching their favorite team for a week, but it’s a nice diversion.
One response to “Florida and Arizona are calling”
ST in Florida is different from AZ in sone ways. 1. The traffic patterns in and around Phoenix stink. You can base yourself in Tampa and visit at least half a dozen other ST sites, see a game and be back in Tampa in plenty of time for dinner. And the best thing about this is that you get to stay the hell out of Phoenix and visit some lovely, laid-back small towns, many on or near the water. In AZ., people will say: what is water? 2. The nights and mornings are warmer in FL. 3. There is vegetation other than cacti. 4. For sone people humidity is lots better than dry air. 5. No dust storms in FL. 6. The flight to and from Chicago is quicker and probably cheaper.
