Even if you never watched the first iteration of Dallas but were old enough, the “Who shot JR?” plot probably resonates with you as ultra-hype fabricated by the media.
If you’ve stuck your nose in the national sports news over the past few weeks, you’ve probably read about Carlos Correa and his free agent deals with the Giants and Mets. It’s impossible to see beyond the hundreds of millions and Correa’s health concerns, but for all the rumors and false leads-possibly leaked by his camp aka Scott Boras.
As I’m not back in “school mode” yet, I’m able to keep an eye on MLB trade news and am laughing at the Correa gobblygook. I don’t pretend to have any sources within the game, I’m just trying to sort through the muck.
I’ve never heard of SNY’s Andy Martino (a source in the story), but I have eaten at Martino’s on Peterson and enjoyed their thin pepperoni pizza. I’m not sure any of this is news or mere hype to keep the Mets “interested.”
Jan. 6: Mets reportedly considering walking away from Correa deal
The Mets have grown “very frustrated” in their negotiations with Correa and are now considering walking away from the deal, reports SNY’s Andy Martino, citing conversations with a “source with direct knowledge of the team’s thinking.”
That said, negotiations are ongoing, and the deal is not dead yet, Martino notes.
New York and Correa reached an agreement on a 12-year, $315 million deal in December, but the contract hasn’t been finalized to this point, reportedly due to concerns about Correa’s physical — the same reason the shortstop’s 13-year, $350 million deal with the Giants fell apart before he struck an agreement with the Mets.
The New York Post reported Thursday that Correa’s camp has “renewed contact with at least another interested team or two beyond the Mets,” one of them being the incumbent Twins.
I understand the need and desire to create and establish demand for a withering market. I’m not sure anyone in New York believes there’s a team out there that will pay as much as the Mets for Correa’s services.
One response to “Not since one of the plot twists on The Eastenders..”
I also call BS on the allegation that another team is interested in Correa. That is DEFINITELY coming from Boras as a negotiation device.
And I never understood the drama of who shot JR. Wasn’t it obvious from the get-go? As you said it was media and network hype working hand in hand.
Thanks for the tip re Martino’s. In the 1960s before there were hundreds of choices for pizza the high school hangout for pizza was Oddo’s on Peterson a block or two east of California on the north side of the street. The Mather Key Club students held a fundraiser there at least once. It’s long gone but existed before there was the nearby Willy’s which outlasted Oddo’s by decades.
