Why I love the Eric Hosmer deal with the Cubs

So long as the Cubs medical staff/experts aren’t the same folks handling the Carlos Correa situation, I couldn’t be happier that the Cubs signed Eric Hosmer to a one-year deal.

I’m neither big enough nor clever enough to engage in click bait posting. That doesn’t mean I won’t react to it and write about it. Such is the case when Hosmer is referred to as a slugger.

Even in the era that I was weaned on, Hosmer’s power numbers don’t =slugger. In 12 seasons, he only has 196 homers and 879 RBI which is an 16/73 average-hardly “sluggerish.”

During his career, his previous home run high was 25 (twice), but more important to this particular club is his ability to hit for average (.277 career) and provide veteral leadership.

I don’t think the Cubs expect him to provide much power, but rather he’ll be a stable force while the team sees what they have in ballyhooed rookie Matt Mervis. Corner infielder, Patrick Wisdom has proven to be a good soldier and his determination is what the game is all about. However, Hosmer probably offers Mervis a better role model.

In the moment, the highlight of the Hosmer deal means that the Chicago sports media is forced to get back to talking baseball for a minute. Understandably, they’ve focused 120% of their attention on the Bears and quarterback Justin Fields.

Everyone in Chicago has dissected the Bears 3-13 season and offered every possible opinion on Fields and his future. As his season has come to an ignominious end and only the bravest souls will watch the finale against the purple wonders, it’s safe to move on to the 2023 MLB season.

I admit that the Andrew Benintendi press conference was equally important, for the same reason. Let’s put the 2022 Chicago Bears out of their misery. Save for Fields’ athleticism, this has been a bloody awful team to watch.

  1. Hosmer was a good signing and when I read that it will cost the Cubs only the minimum salary for 2023 I know that scumbag racist Papa Joe thinks that it is a great signing.
