Imagine being a professional athlete

If you have ever listened to a team sporting event on television or the radio, it’s impossible to escape the endless recitations of all the players resumes. It’s quite laughable as all of them have reached the pinnacle of their careers in reaching the highest league available. Rest assured, these guys and gals were the best in high school and among the best in college too.

Yet, in some odd need for reaffirmation or to pump them up, we’re reminded that so and so was an all-star (often only once) as if it’s on their government-issue id. I’ll even add it to the occasional post, but with a wink that you can’t see.

Imagine if every time you were introduced or announced at a party, they added all of your accomplishments in your career. Every employee of the month, week or year, highest attendance in grade school, or class rank attached as if to give credibility to who you are.

It’s great if a player gets some extra do re mi for an all-star appearance, but most fans can tell the difference-especially in the NFL where fourth, fifth and sixth options often make the final roster in Hawaii (or wherever they play that game now).

Could you imagine adding all those honors to your passport. I think I’ll practice with the students and see if they can work that out.

  1. We both know people that would probably like to have their highest accomplishments recited every time that they enter a room.

At least Pat Hughes has decreased the telling of the audience about his radio partner’s all star appearance. When Ron first started his gig we used to hear about it way too often.

And actually I don’t mind hearing a player’s resume, especially during a game not involving local teams or a game involving g a sport where i am unfamiliar with the players, which to me is every non-baseball game. I hope that hearing all this info. doesn’t irritate you as much as you make it seem that it does.

    • Doesn’t irritate me, just find it humorous like they feel the need to validate-it’s great if the honor was somewhat recent or they explained, oh yeah 7 years ago he made the All Star team
