I’d love to say that the two days has cleared things up for me, but it hasn’t and I’m sure Giants fans are no less confused. They’ve also got to be pretty steamed. It seemed like years ago when the Giants signed Carlos Correa to a 13-year, $350 million deal.
And then, at the last minute, the Giants pulled the offer off the table because of some inconsistencies with the medical reports. Because of HIPPA, San Francisco can’t talk specifics. However, the media can speculate.
The story doesn’t end there because Steve Cohen and the Mets stepped in and offered him 12 years and $315 million. Right now, the Mets look like the smartest guys in the room and the Giants look like Shemp Howard. I can’t imagine how mad Giants fans are right now. This was supposed to be the move that saved the franchise and brought fans back to the ballpark.
The Giants might end up being correct and they’ll make Cohen look the fool. Apparently, Correa agreed to move to third in deference to his friend, Francisco Lindor. Heck, for far less money, I agreed to return to kindergarten for a day.
Since the Giants dropped 26 wins this past season (107-81), they ceased being relevant in the NL West. It has to gall their fans that they are not the Dodgers current #1 enemy and rival. The Padres have spent gazillions of dollars as they try to unseat the Dodgers. That they defeated them in the playoffs this year must have driven the Dodgers crazy.
The folks at MLB.com have been pumping up the Giants recent acquisitions of reliever, Taylor Rogers and outfielder, Michael Conforto. I don’t expect anyone is really buying that reuniting Rogers with his twin brother is going to remind anyone of the Brothers Cliburn. I’m also wondering how Brandon Crawford is reacting to this. Conforto will probably produce well enough to re-enter the free agent market in two years.
Correa’s agent, Scott Boras keeps yelling from the mountain top that Correa is sound and a good investment, but that is laughable-sort of like a parent trying to convince a teacher that their C+ kid really is an honor student. Ha!
The Mets and Phillies are approaching things a little differently from the Braves. We’ll see whose M.O is most effective in 2023 and beyond. At the end of the day, only one team in the NL can play in the World Series.
